PUBLIC SECTOR LAWYERS’ SECTION
NOTICE OF WEBINAR

DATE: Thursday, April 16, 2020
TIME:     12:00 Noon – 1:30pm
TOPIC:  Religious Freedom in the Public Sector
SPEAKERS:    Derek Ross, Executive Director, Christian Legal Fellowship
Melanie R. Bueckert, Legal Research Counsel, Manitoba Court of Appeal

At its recent Annual General Meeting, the Canadian Bar Association passed a resolution regarding our “Commitment to religious equality in the legal profession”.  The resolution specifically responds to Quebec’s Bill 21, An Act respecting the laicity of the State, which prevents public sector lawyers from wearing religious symbols at work.  Derek Ross, the mover of the resolution, will provide some background on the situation in Quebec and the CBA resolution.  Other religious freedom issues arising in the public sector will also be discussed, including freedom of conscience for healthcare professionals related to medical assistance in dying.  Melanie Bueckert will provide an overview of Manitoba’s response to these developments.

Please RSVP (PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED) to the Manitoba Bar Association online at www.cbapd.org.  You will need a computer to participate. You will receive log-in information after you have registered, approximately one day before the session.

Attendance at this MBA Section meeting can be applied towards your Law Society of Manitoba’s Continuing Professional Development requirement for a maximum of 1.5 hours.
