DATE: Wednesday, October 30, 2019
TIME:     12:00 Noon – 1:30pm
TOPIC:  Who Gets the Dog? Family Property Division and Disputes Over Custody of Pets
SPEAKERS:
Nunziata Masi, Levene Tadman Golub LLP
Prof. Jodi Lazare, Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University

What happens to pets when couples decide to separate or divorce? The law has long treated family pets as property, and hence the rules of property division apply to family pets just as they do for other types of personal property. However, this treatment of family pets as possession may not accord with many people’s perceptions of their pets, nor does it address many of the related factors that go along with pet ownership.

Please join Nunziata Masi as she discusses the current state of the law in Manitoba regarding property division and pets. Professor Lazare will then explore where the law might be going in light of recent case law in other jurisdictions and the growing recognition that pets are more than just possessions for many people.

This webinar may be of interest to those who practice in family law, property law, or whose work relates to animal law issues.

You will need a telephone and computer to participate.  Please RSVP (PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED) on-line at www.cbapd.org. You will receive log-in information after you have registered, approximately one day before the session.
