  • July 05, 2012

Chair:  Stewart J. Pierce
Past Chair:  Nigel J. Thompson

The Section has had a bit of late start this year. The first substantive educational session was held in
December 2011.  Charlotte Price and staff from Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship gave a
presentation on The Protected Areas Program initiated by the Province.  The presentation explained the
actions that are being taken so as to ensure that Manitoba protects ecologically significant features of
our environment through appropriate policy and legislative tools.  In March 2012, Kim Philip the Director
of the Drinking Water Office provided an overview of the work of her office in relation to the
requirements of The Drinking Water Safety Act. In April 2012, I attended the annual CBA NEERLS
educational conference and business meeting in Vancouver.    The topic was Environmental Issues in
Business Transactions.  A wide range of issues were canvassed from across Canada and abroad including
Latest Developments in the Law related to Liability for Contaminated Sites, Due Diligence and
Environmental Risk Management in Complex Transactions and Environmental Issues in the Insolvency
context.  The final meeting of the Environmental Section was June 26, 2012.  The topic was Biodigestors,
(i.e. devices that are designed to deal with food waste management in an environmentally friendly
manner).

Respectfully submitted,
Stewart Pierce, Chair
