Environmental Law Section Report 2014-2015

  • August 20, 2015

Chair: Stewart J. Pierce

The first substantive educational session was held in December 2014. Terry Sargeant the
current Chair of the Clean Environment Commission gave a presentation on Effective Advocacy
before the CEC. The second educational section was held in March 2015 at which time Jon
Stefaniuk and Gord Hannon did a joint presentation on the Implications of the SCC decision in
Tsilhqot’in Nation v. British Columbia to the Private Sector and to Government. The section has
shown some slow but steady growth over the last few years, with a consistent and steady core
of members, augmented by newer lawyers who are beginning to develop practices that have an
Environmental law component to them. So that is encouraging. In March 2015, as the MBA
Section Rep, I attended the annual CBA NEERLS educational conference and business
meeting in Calgary. The topic was Environment in the Courtroom: Evidentiary Issues in
Environmental Prosecutions and Hearings. A wide range of enforcement issues were
canvassed from across Canada. A third section meeting is contemplated for late June with the
topic yet to be determined.

Respectfully submitted, Stewart Pierce
