Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Conference Report 2010‐2011

  • August 11, 2011

The Section was involved in the following activities for the year 2010/2011:

  1. At the beginning of the university year the law school LBGTTQ* student group, Outlaws, hosted a joint event with SOGIC at G. Martini's.  The event had great attendance both from the Manitoba legal community as well as the students and faculty from the University of Manitoba.
  2. October 20, 2010, a general meeting was held to discuss potential events, plan for the Pride reception and to designate a member to follow up with the Manitoba Justice Department on the issue of adding gender identity to the Manitoba Human Rights Code.
  3. In December a holiday event was held at the home of Kristine Barr and Krista Piche.
  4. On January 25, 2011, SOGIC had an information session with Canadian Blood Services Information Session on the existing blood ban for gay men.  The meeting was well attended and received coverage in the media.
  5. On June 1, 2010, SOGIC hosted a Pride reception at the home of the Honourable Tim Preston, the event was well attended by both community members and allies.  This year, again on June 1, SOGIC hosted a Pride reception, this time at the offices of Taylor McCaffrey.  The Pride reception is an official Winnipeg Pride event and was listed in the annual Pride Guide, it is hoped that this will draw more non‐legal members to learn about the work SOGIC does.
  6. Krista Piche and Jeff Parker attended the National SOGIC meeting in Calgary May 13 and 14, 2011 as the Manitoba representatives, Kristine Barr also attended as the National Chair.

In the coming year our committee will be comprised as follows: Jeffrey Parker (Co‐Chair), Danielle Fraser (Co‐Chair).

Respectfully Submitted
Jeffrey Parker, Co‐Chair
