Women Lawyers’ Forum Report 2012‐2013

The Women Lawyers’ Forum is the connecting point for women in the legal profession. Through the inter‐lacing of the social and the professional, the Women Lawyers’ Forum provides an opportunity for women in the law to meet, to talk and to get to know each other better, for personal and professional benefit. The Forum organizes several events each year where women can engage, relax and enjoy the company of other women who share the law as a common thread.

Criminal Justice Section Report 2012‐2013

All practicing lawyers in Manitoba must now report their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities to the Law Society of Manitoba on an annual basis.    For 2011, it was recommended that lawyers complete 12 hours of CPD activities.  Beginning in 2012, lawyers are now required to complete 12 hours of CPD activities, which must include 1.5 hours of Ethics, Professional Responsibility and Practice Management (EPPM).

Corporate (In‐House) Counsel Section Report 2012‐2013

The Manitoba Bar Association CCCA Section was very active this year. Regular members of the Section include in‐house counsel employed by business enterprises, not for profit organizations, and municipal and government bodies, as well as associate members from the private bar.

Civil Litigation Section Report 2012‐2013

During the 2012 ‐ 2013 term (September 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013) the Civil Litigation Section sponsored three professional development seminars. The first CPD seminar was held on December 13, 2012. Chris Wullum (Tapper Cuddy LLP) and Alfred Thiessen (Tapper Cuddy LLP) spoke about the recent Ontario Court of Appeal decision in Jones v. Tsige as well as a discussion of the Privacy Act.

Alternative Dispute Resolution Section Report 2012‐2013

The most significant thing to report is the extreme success we enjoyed by making a presentation at the Mid‐Winter Conference of 2013. We presented an Alternate Dispute Resolution Conference which comprised of Justice Doug Abra, Dave Hill and Candace Grammond. Before a large crowd we conducted the Judicially Assisted Dispute Resolution conference which lasted over two hours and seemingly was appreciated by everyone in attendance.
