ASSOCIATE JUDGE (1 position)
WINNIPEG
The Associate Judge Appointment Committee welcomes the interest of qualified persons wishing to be considered for appointment as an Associate Judge of the Court of King’s Bench of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Due to an upcoming retirement effective December 31, 2025, one position in Winnipeg is expected to be filled, with an appointment date anticipated in early 2026.
It is the responsibility of the Associate Judge Appointment Committee to recommend to the Attorney General a list of not fewer than three and not more than six names of individuals for this position. The mandate of the Associate Judge Appointment Committee is to assess the professional excellence, community awareness and personal suitability of candidates, while taking into account the diversity of Manitoba society (c. 280, The Court of King’s Bench Act).
An Associate Judge of the Court of King’s Bench is also a Registrar in Bankruptcy. As an Associate Judge, the successful candidate will carry a substantial caseload in the areas of civil, family, child protection, estate and bankruptcy litigation. Judicial duties include presiding over dockets relating to the enforcement of family maintenance orders, child protection cases and bankrupt discharge applications; the determination of both contested and uncontested civil, family, and bankruptcy motions; conducting court references, including accountings under the The Family Property Act; presiding over the passing of committee and estate accounts as well as solicitor client fee assessments. The position of an Associate Judge also includes a significant amount of written work in the form of reasons for decision and reference reports.
Applicants must meet the following qualilfications:
a) be a member in good standing of The Law Society of Manitoba;
b) be entitled to practise as a barrister and solicitor in Manitoba;
and c) have practised as a barrister and solicitor in Manitoba for not less than five years, or have other equivalent experience.
Applicants must be willing to reside in Winnipeg, and be capable of and willing to travel to court sittings throughout Manitoba.
