True North Sports + Entertainment is looking for a detail-oriented and committed Legal Counsel to join our team.
The Legal Counsel will have the ability to manage a broad in-house workload and will assist in providing and coordinating legal services across all True North entities, venues, and operations in support of key business functions and initiatives.
What to be excited for in this role:
For all facets of True North, this position shall support in providing effective legal advice, counsel, and document support for the following, non-exhaustive, list:
Commercial Legal Support
- Assist with drafting and reviewing a wide range of commercial agreements, including sponsorship, ticketing, suite licensing, event, promoter, artist, venue, production, lease, and hockey operations agreements.
- Prepare contest rules, waivers, and releases for NHL, AHL, and event-related promotions.
- Support trademark registrations, enforcement, and license agreements.
- Assist with NHL and AHL-related legal matters as required.
- Support labour and employment matters, including labour relations, workers’ compensation claims, escalated staff concerns, and terminations.
- Assist with preparing and reviewing employment agreements, internal and external contracts, and related onboarding documents.
- Provide day-to-day legal support across corporate sales, ticketing, marketing, events, hockey operations, and human resources.
Legal Operations
- Oversee and prepare legal correspondence, board resolutions, business name renewals and corporate filings.
- Establish and maintain organized legal and document-management systems.
- Conduct preliminary legal research and produce summaries for review.
- Litigation management and tracking support.
Privacy Compliance and Governance
- Support True North’s privacy program — policies, procedures, regulatory compliance, training, and documentation and ensure day-to-day operations comply with privacy laws such as PIPEDA, GDPR, and CASL.
True North Youth Foundation
- Assist with TNYF-related matters as directed.
Current Legal Issues
- Stay up to date on current legal issues and trends, advising applicable True North staff and stakeholders as directed.
Other
- Undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the position and the needs of the organization
What we need from you:
- 3-5+ years of legal experience.
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Manitoba.
- Demonstrated ability and interest in supporting a broad internal client base.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
- Proven discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
- Exercise sound judgment, manage conflicting priorities, and work collaboratively.
- Builds and maintains strong client relationships across diverse teams.
- Responsive, resourceful, practical and strong problem solver
- Superior organizational skills and attention to detail
- Evening and weekend work required, and on-call as needed.
- Proven ability to prioritize competing demands in a diverse and evolving environment, and capacity to meet objectives and required timelines.
