Job Purpose
Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Accountability & Integrity, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, the Legal Summer Student will support the organization’s legal and governance functions through research, project work, and operational support. The role provides exposure to a broad range of legal matters, including commercial, regulatory, governance, and litigation support activities.
The role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience within an in-house legal environment.
This position is intended for a senior law student and is not an articling placement.
Job Responsibilities
• Conduct legal research and prepare research summaries and briefing materials in support of a variety of legal matters.
• Assist with less complex commercial matters, including contract drafting, template development, and legal research.
• Prepare memoranda and summaries based on legal opinion databases, legislation, and regulatory information for senior legal counsel.
• Support litigation and arbitration files by assisting with discovery compilation, preparation of document binders and records, and maintaining organized and up-to-date legal files.
• Assist legal team with larger legal and governance initiatives.
• Support departmental projects related to records management and the implementation of the document management system, including file review, organization, and validation of records.
Primary Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in a Faculty of Law program at a recognized Canadian Law School.
• Applicants must have completed at least one year of law school.
• Candidates who have completed their degree or who are eligible for articling are not eligible, as this role is not an articling position.
• Must be returning to studies following the summer term.
• Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Professional judgment, discretion, and ability to handle confidential information.
• Ability to work collaboratively with individuals across multiple departments.
• Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
