WCLC is seeking a dynamic legal professional who is ready to take the next step in their career to join our senior leadership team as Vice President, Legal Counsel & Corporate Secretary. This role is well suited for a lawyer with a strong legal foundation who is motivated to grow, learn, and take on broader enterprise-level responsibilities.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted legal advisor to the President and Board, focusing on legal, audit, and risk matters.
  • Act as the principal liaison between the Board of Directors and executive management, supporting governance processes.
  • Support the development and maintenance of corporate governance practices and policies.
  • Oversee preparation of reports, legal opinions, and documents for Board review.
  • Act as a strategic legal partner to the President and Executive Leadership Team, supporting decision-making with practical, business-focused legal advice.
  • Demonstrates a strong interest in leveraging AI and emerging technologies to enhance business operations.
  • Actively explores innovative solutions to improve efficiency, transparency, and compliance within the organization.
  • Provide leadership to audit and risk team and oversee enterprise-wide legal strategy and risk management frameworks.
  • Act as executive sponsor for legal audits and risk mitigation initiatives
  • Identify legal risks and issues early, escalating appropriately and partnering with internal and external counsel as required.
  • Proactively manage potential litigation situations, regulatory filings, contract negotiations, and investigations.
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives and special projects that require legal insight and judgment.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive legal experience. Exposure to audit and risk management is an asset.
  • Solid understanding of employment law, contract law, and risk management.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise Boards and executives on legal matters.
  • Collaborative and influential, able to build trust across the organization.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including drafting for disclosure and board materials.
  • Ability to organize work, manage multiple files concurrently, and meet deadlines.
  • High degree of integrity, judgment, and professional ethics.

Education

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) from a recognized law school.
  • Must be a member in good standing or eligible for immediate membership with the Law Society of Manitoba.
  • Additional credentials in business or leadership (e.g., MBA) considered an asset.

WCLC is the non-profit organization authorized to manage, conduct, and operate lotteries – at retail and online – and other gaming-related activities for the governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba as well as the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
