About The Opportunity

Taylor McCaffrey LLP is one of Manitoba's leading full-service law firms, recognized for delivering exceptional legal counsel and trusted client service. We are seeking an experienced lawyer to join our highly regarded Wills, Estates & Trusts practice in downtown Winnipeg.

This is an opportunity to become part of a collaborative and well-established team advising individuals, families, business owners, executors, trustees, and fiduciaries on complex estate planning, wealth preservation, incapacity planning, and estate administration matters. The successful candidate will play a meaningful role in helping clients navigate significant personal and financial decisions while contributing to the continued growth of a premier practice.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience focused primarily on estate and incapacity planning and estate administration. They will possess strong technical expertise, sound judgment, and a comprehensive understanding of how tax, corporate, family, and succession considerations intersect with estate planning. Equally important, they will bring empathy, professionalism, and exceptional interpersonal skills to a practice area that often involves clients during some of life's most significant transitions.

Key Responsibilities

Advise clients on Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives, Estate Planning Agreements, Trusts, Beneficiary Designations, succession of Jointly Owned Assets and related estate planning strategies.

Advise clients on Estate Administration matters, including explaining their initial tasks, preparing applications to Court as required, guiding clients with regard to the realization of the estate assets, beneficiary distributions and all other steps which may arise during administration.

Recommend appropriate legal solutions, define the scope of work, discuss fees, and confidently guide clients through the engagement process.

Oversee each matter through intake to completion, supported by dedicated paralegal and administrative staff.

Collaborate with accountants, financial advisors, and with the client’s primary legal advisor, if any.

Required Experience & Qualifications

Membership in good standing with a Law Society in a Canadian common-law jurisdiction, with no practice restrictions.

Minimum five years of experience practicing primarily in estate and incapacity planning and administration.

Demonstrated experience leading client meetings, developing and implementing estate planning strategies for clients.

Sound judgment to recognize matters outside the scope of estate planning / estate administration and coordinate referrals to our corporate and tax lawyers or external specialists.

Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines while providing excellent client service.

Collaborative spirit and ability to work independently.

Willingness to provide guidance and mentorship to young lawyers and paralegals as required.

Ability to work from Winnipeg on a full-time, part-time or hybrid basis, with availability to start within approximately 30–60 days.

What Will Set You Apart

STEP designation (TEP) or active enrolment in the STEP program.

Current or past involvement with your provincial Bar Association’s Wills and Estates section.

A solid understanding of the law relating to Wills and Estates and of its intersectionality with other areas of the law.

Experience drafting complex or advanced Wills, Powers of Attorneys and Health Care Directives.
