Taylor McCaffrey LLP is one of Manitoba's leading full-service law firms, recognized for providing exceptional legal counsel and trusted client service. We are seeking a motivated lawyer to join our well-established Wills, Estates & Trusts group in downtown Winnipeg.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an early-career lawyer to develop a sophisticated wills, estates, and trusts practice within a collaborative and supportive environment. Working closely with experienced practitioners, you will gain hands-on experience advising clients on estate planning, incapacity planning, trusts, and estate administration matters while receiving meaningful mentorship and guidance.
The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, detail-oriented professional with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience in estate and incapacity planning and administration is an asset, as is exposure to the ways in which tax and family law considerations can influence estate planning strategies. We are seeking a lawyer who combines sound technical abilities and a genuine eagerness to learn with empathy, professionalism, and emotional intelligence, recognizing the highly personal nature of this area of practice.
We are looking to invest in and mentor a lawyer who enjoys working directly with clients, leading thoughtful conversations, and helping individuals and families make informed decisions about their future. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build meaningful client relationships, develop practical legal expertise, and contribute to a highly regarded and growing practice.
This position offers an outstanding opportunity to establish and grow a Wills, Estates & Trusts practice with a respected firm that maintains a consistent and robust flow of estate planning and administration work.
Key Responsibilities
• Advise clients on Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives and related estate planning strategies.
• Recommend appropriate legal solutions, define the scope of work, discuss fees, and confidently guide clients through the engagement process.
• Work collaboratively with experienced senior lawyers on complex or advanced planning and administration matters.
• Provide support and guidance to executors / administrators, and oversee each estate through intake to completion with the supported by dedicated paralegal and administrative staff.
• Collaborate with accountants, financial advisors, and with the client’s primary legal advisor, if any.
• Build and maintain strong referral relationships with accountants, wealth advisors, insurance professionals, and other trusted partners.
• Develop long-term client relationships that extend well beyond the initial estate plan.
Required Experience & Qualifications
• Membership in good standing with a Law Society in a Canadian common-law jurisdiction, with no practice restrictions.
• Minimum one year of experience practicing law with some exposure to estate and incapacity planning and administration.
• Willingness to lead client meetings and to develop estate planning / administration strategies for clients.
• Sound judgment to recognize matters outside the scope of estate planning / estate administration and coordinate referrals to our corporate and tax lawyers or external specialists.
• Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines while providing excellent client service.
• Collaborative spirit and ability to work independently.
• Willingness to learn and to accept the guidance and mentorship of senior lawyers.
• Ability to work from Winnipeg on a full-time, part-time or hybrid basis, with availability to start within approximately 30–60 days.
• Self-motivated and detail-oriented with a problem-solving mindset.
What Will Set You Apart
• Experiencing providing estate planning / administration advice or services in private practice, or in-house with a reputable financial institution or trust company.
• STEP designation (TEP) or active enrolment in the STEP program.
• Current or past involvement with your provincial Bar Association’s Wills and Estates section.
• A basic understanding of the law of wills and estates, particularly with regard to the taxation of asset at death, beneficiary designations, and jointly owned assets.
